You could soon be paying sales tax on your purchase on eBay, Amazon, and other e-commerce sites.
A number of news sources (including the Chicago Sun-Times) are following events as various states explore ways of imposing sales taxes on items bought over the Internet.
Amazon is already in court, suing the State of New York over requirements that online retailers collect sales tax on items they ship to that state. One source estimates that as much as $3 billion could be collected in sales tax from online purchases if those purchases are taxed by states.
