Ever since bloggers started blogging, they have been competing over who has the most readers. This competition has gone way beyond that and now that a lot of blogs are commercial, the competition has become stronger. In order te become better known as a blogger, sites like Digg were invented, where anyone with an account can vote (digg) for an article or website, thus making it more popular. Others than read Digg (or Digg-like sites) to see what's hot and go and read that, making the site or article even more popular since traffic is driven there.
So far, all is clear. Now all of this has one downside : You could potentially, as a blogger, make yourself more popular by digging yourself or having others digg you upon request. The latter action has been taken very seriously and this has gooten completely out of hand. A certain number of bloggers are only digging stories for certain people, in large quantities. This is sad, because this gives users the wrong impression.
JP has crunched the numbers. Read it and weep.
Digg is now a thing of the past. Using digg is bad.

I find that it's too bad that this has happened. Now it's not really an accurate measurement of what's really of interest, but rather just a popularity contest that is starting to add less and less value to its original purpose and the people that wanted to use it to really vote on what they liked.

Exactly. It is only a matter of time until you get credits somewhere with your digg ranking....Terrible.
