Universal storage : how about security ?
Filed in archive Web 2.0 on January 25, 2007
In the Web 2.0 revolution, networked storage (SAN, NAS for private use) is moving up in the world. Several companies offer online storage, and Omnidrive is just one of them.Omnidrive allows you to drag+drop files on your desktop and to access those files as easily as you access your other desktop files. With the web interface, you can edit common document types such as Word Documents in your web browser without any desktop software!
Great. Drag 'n Drop and such make the application feel like a local one. Zoho, creator of the online office suite, has just announced a partnership with Omnidrive, where all documents created are stored in your Omnidrive. This is a good development, as all these thousands of online applications should integrate more. My main concern though is of a different kind : *security*. How secure is your data ? Is it encrypted and locked away ? A newcomer is KeepYouSafe.com.KeepYouSafe.Com provides Online Safe Deposit Boxes to families and individuals who wish to securely store important records and other information and be able to access those stored records from anywhere, at any time, via the internet.
The personal information stored in an Online Safe Deposit Box is available to the box's owners only, unless box owners choose to grant access to family members and trusted friends. Each box's contents are protected by the same strong encryption and other security technologies used by the U.S. military to secure top secret data (Keepyousafe.com).
And I personally think the future is with them and companies like them.

The discussion will probably last forever. Have you read about Cap Gemini's use of Google Apps ? A big discussion was started after the announcement about SOx requirements and Google's storage facilities. We may need to accept that things have changed...

There is a strict relationship between how much security you can have and accessibility, in a model such as the one you describe where everything is locked up and only the client has the key - you can't make use of anything else that Web 2.0 is known for (such as access to your data from other apps)
At Omnidrive we not only have the openess where you can access your data from other applications, but soon we will be allowing users to encrypt certain folders or files. On our paid accounts connections to the server are SSL. It is impossible though, to have both encrypted and open to other apps.
