Viacom announces broadcast deal with Joost
Filed in archive Newsdesk 2.0 on February 21, 2007
Viacom will be teaming up with Joost to provide TV shows from MTV, BET Networks and Paramount Pictures on the P2P internet TV platform. Joost aims to be a TV replacement service where you are free of schedules and have control over what you watch, when you want to watch it. Several companies are running TV replacement services, and it seems to be an interesting market with loads of developments. A lot of people were expecting Viacom to signup with Youtube, as the latter also aims to be a TV replacement and currently has enough exposure to do so. It was only after Viacom's request to remove 100,000 clips from Youtube recently that people started to think Viacom might choose another partner for TV broadcast content.Viacom's leading brands include the multiplatform properties of MTV Networks, including MTV, VH1, Nickelodeon, Nick at Nite, COMEDY CENTRAL, CMT: Country Music Television, Spike TV, TV Land, Logo and more than 130 networks around the world, as well as digital assets such as Neopets, Xfire, ifilm and Atom Entertainment; BET Networks; Paramount Pictures; Paramount Home Entertainment; DreamWorks; and Famous Music.(WebTVWire)

A search for the keyword "MTV" on YouTube finds over 50,000 videos but this search misses many videos not labeled as being from MTV. A "BET" search shows some BET videos but it doesn't work because any video description that includes the word "bet" also gets included.

First Viacom, now CBS. While the world seems to focus on Apple TV, Joost is quietly building a stable of top-notch video brands that it will use to populate its free, advertising supported "Internet TV" service.

From it's first appearance P2P technology really sky-rocketed. Internet TV is all based on this technology. Proves fast in a high number of applications but it's not as secure as "old traditional" methods.
