Virtual Worlds Fade… Except for Second Life

Venture Beat had an interesting piece recently on how virtual worlds are doing these days.

Virtual worlds were a big deal for a while. Venture Beat points out that there was a time when over 200 virtual worlds existed – just for children. But most have now died of natural causes. There are still some out there. The educational world is especially enamored of them (and some of them do make good educational environments). Most seem to have fallen victim to a simple truth: there is only so much time in the day, and people would rather be on Twitter and Facebook.

But while many virtual worlds have faded into oblivious, Second Life has never been better. In the midst of last year's Recession, Second Life's economy grew 65%. And the number of users is up, too – to over 826,000.

The Venture Beat piece has much more detail, if you're looking for stats on Second Life.
