CMP Media and O'Reilly have filed for a trademark on the phrase "Web 2.0". Bizarre ? In some ways, yes. Why they did it ? They've put together the Web 2.0 conference, due to take place in San Francisco in november 2006. Now several sites reported that the use of the phrase whatsoever is now prohibited, but this is not the case. A non-profit organisation however that wanted to organize a conference on the subject was asked already to remove the phrase.

To protect the brand we've established with our two Web 2.0 Conferences, we're taking steps to register "Web 2.0" as our service mark, for conferences.
