Last week Zamzar launched. Zamzar offers free online file conversion. If you have a jpg file and need it as png, Zamzar can do it. I got excited. I have a need for 3gp video files, created on my Treo650 to be converted to avi or some other much used video format. So I went to Zamzar.

In the input file box I selected my 3gp file. I chose the right format, video 3gp because the site complained it could not determine the right file format. I selected the video output format using the output dropdown box, and pressed enter. A minute or so later, the site informed me it was unable to process the 3gp file conversion. I tried it using various other video output formats, but Zamzar could not help me. I gave up.
I am sure though you can convert a gif file to a jpg file. But almost any image editor can already do that. So if this tool can't convert other video formats, or sound files to other type of sound files, it's useless. I still hope it's not.

I think it’s a bit unfair to suggest that the site doesn’t support conversion of video and sound formats – there’s a whole host available on there.
It’s true that it doesn’t look like the site supports conversion from 3gp (conversion *to* 3gp is supported), but you could always request it via their conversion suggestion page at http://www.zamzar.com/conversionTypes.php
Maybe that’s true, but this is simply based on my testing. And the first test I did went teribly wrong. If the site shows the option but it doesn’t work, that’s annoying. I was kinda thrilled the site showed 3gp conversion….
